Aligarh Muslim University

An educational movement that shaped a university.

In 1877, the great educationist and social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College (MAO) in Aligarh which later became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. The institution is patterned after Oxford and Cambridge universities and is open to all irrespective of caste, creed, religion or gender.

Today, AMU draws students from across India and from Africa, West Asia and Southeast Asia. Its traditions of open inquiry and service continue to shape the alumni who carry its legacy worldwide.
